What Is Speedway

Some people that I've spoken to, don't have the foggiest clue of what speedway exactly is, let alone knowing a few rules etc, so for those of you that don't know, I'll try and explain. In Britain, there are three main speedway leagues: the national league, the premier league and the elite league.

Each team consists of 7 riders and they all race against one another over a series of 15 heats (or races). Each heat lasts for 4 laps and is raced by 2 riders from each team. The winner of each heat gets 3 points, the second place gets 2 points and the third place gets 1 point...sadly the guy at the back in fourth place gets nothing. For example, if the home side come first and second, that means that the home side have a 5-1 against the away side. If the away side comes first and the home side come second and third, then that's a shared 3-3. If the home side comes first and third, that's a 4-2 to the home side. I think you get the picture. It's not too hard to figure out. The total points scored from each rider are all added together to give a total score for the team at the end of the meeting. The team with the most points is the winner.

The home side riders wear red and blue crash helmets and the away side riders wear green and yellow/black crash helmets. The riders also wear small race jackets over their kevlars with their team logo on the front and also have their rider number placed on it somewhere. The earnings of each rider are decided by the amount of points they score in each meeting, so their own individual scores are just as important as the overall team result. Each rider has an average based on their point tally in every meeting. The averages are re-calculated every month by speedway's ruling body, the BSPA (British Speedway Promoters Association). The average affects where a rider is placed in the team.

Key To Match Reports

In match reports, there are several letters and symbols that can stand for certain things happening, like touching the tapes, someone's engine failing etc. Some of this key has been found in the speedway magazine, Speedway Star, but of course some other people may write these letters down in other ways, as I've tried to show.

* = A bonus point for following a man home.
^ = A tactical ride from the tapes (points are doubled).
<> = The rider is handicapped 15 metres for touching the tapes or missing the 2 minute warning.
X = The rider is excluded (can be written as EX or FX for fell and excluded).
T = The rider is excluded for touching tapes.
M = The rider is excluded for delaying the start or missing the 2 minute warning.
R = The rider has an engine failure or retires (can be written as EF or RET).
N = The rider fell (can be written as F) or is a non-starter (can be written as NS).
DNS/F/R = The rider did not start, finish or ride.
F/REM = The rider fell and then re-mounted.
